Local version
Run Sift on your own machine
The local version is the same app running on your computer instead of a shared host. It is multiplatform - Windows, macOS, and Linux - needs only a supported Node.js runtime, and is how you connect a real detection API so you can read validated (still probabilistic) results.
Requirements
- Node.js 20 or newer (the one runtime, works on Windows, macOS, Linux).
- A terminal. No other system dependencies, no database, no cloud account required.
- Optional: a detector API endpoint and key if you want real classification. Without one the local signature is all you get, and that is stated honestly in the UI.
Quick start, one command at a time
git clone <your-repo-url> siftcd sift && npm installnpm run buildPORT=8787 node .output/server/index.mjs
Connecting a real detector (optional)
To move from the clearly-labeled experimental signature to real classification, configure a detection API and run locally:
1. Create a .env file
2. Point it at your provider
3. Restart and check
Limitations of the local version
The local signature is an unvalidated texture profile. It does not detect AI and is not evidence, in either direction.
Real detection quality is entirely a property of whichever provider you configure; Sift does not add accuracy to a provider's output.
Long text is capped (about 60,000 characters) so single-pass analysis stays fast on modest CPUs.
There is no bundled offline model. Real classification requires network access to your provider at run time.
What stays private
On your own machine nothing leaves it except an explicit call to a provider you configured yourself. On any host you deploy, the interface still discloses external processing before it submits anything. Sift does not log or store the text you check.
